Design philosophy.

Great UX design goes unnoticed - it just works. I design usable, intuitive and inclusive systems, using modular approaches that scale across teams and products.

Principles I stick to

Make it intuitive

So that little thought to enable users to achieve their goals.

Don't let users make mistakes easily

But help them correct faults if they occur.

Make it simple

Whilst offering all necessary services - helping users access what they need efficiently when they need it.

Provide visual heirarchy and focus

On important information whilst surfacing necessary supplementary details.

Use interaction and visual patterns consistently

Across interfaces, utilising commonly understood design patterns that are universal and instinctive.

Make it usable by everyone

On all devices and navigational tools (mouse, keyboard, touch) without detriment to anyone's experience.

Consider the experience beyond the interface

It interlinks with realworld scenarios, uses appropriate emotion for the context, and informs users about processes outside of digital or when to return.

Involving the users

Users should be considered at every point of the process:

  • During inception - where we understand their frustrations, needs and desires.
  • During design - where we review early and often.
  • During testing - where we can catch problems before releases.
  • After release - when users really get to use the system, their needs may change and real data can inform design.

Solving problems

Problems are solved through processes of diverging and converging (the double diamond design process). The specifics of each design problem are different and require different approaches, conversations and techniques, but the core method remains the same: we explore a problem area or concept before focusing in and finding the right solution. Involving the right stakeholders at the right time is key to enabling the right solutions to be developed.

My favourite UX Law

Hick's Law - Too many options make it hard for the user to absorb the choices and decide.

My favourite topic in a design team

Consistency, scalability and systematic thinking.

What design success looks like to me

When something goes live and there is no feedback. Sounds odd and rather worring, right? But you'll definitely hear about it if it's not working. For me this is the norm in fast-paced, high-delivery environments that churn out features.

What energises me

Conversations and collaborating - many hands make light work and many brains make fully informed decisions.
